The Holy Bull Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. Run in late January, it is open to three-year-olds over a distance of one mile and 1/16. The Grade II event is a prep for the Florida Derby and has a $400,000 purse.
Inaugurated in 1990 as the Preview Stakes, it was created as a replacement for the Flamingo Stakes that ceased to exist following the closure of Hialeah Park Race Track. In 1996, the Preview Stakes was renamed in honor of U.S. Racing Hall of Fame horse Holy Bull.
“Holy Bull to match Upstart and Frosted”
Upstart, third behind Texas Red and Carpe Diem in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in his last start, was confirmed as a starter Sunday by trainer Rick Violette after a six-furlong workout in 1:12.20 at the Palm Meadows training center.
Frosted, runner-up as the favorite behind Leave the Light On in the Remsen last out, also worked over the weekend at Palm Meadows, breezing a half-mile Saturday in 48 seconds for Godolphin Racing and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.
“Upstart Takes On Frosted in Holy Bull”
Ralph M. Evans’ Upstart is slated to embark on his much-anticipated 3-year-old campaign in Saturday’s $400,000 Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park.
“Upstart faces nine in Holy Bull”
ork-bred ridgling who held his own against some of the leading juveniles in the country last fall, might go off a slight favorite when he returns to the track Saturday for the $400,000 Holy Bull (G2) at Gulfstream Park.
The 1 1/16-mile Holy Bill, a prep for the Fountain of Youth (G2) and Florida Derby (G1) later in the meet, anchors an 11-race program that includes four other stakes.
“Bluegrass Singer entered in both Holy Bull and Hutcheson”
The Holy Bull and Hutcheson are important prep races for 3-year-olds leading to the Florida Derby on March 28.
Bluegrass Singer, owned by Cross Sabres Farm and trained by Marcus Vitali, has drawn post 4 for the 10-horse, 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull and the far outside post for the eight-horse, seven-furlong Hutcheson. Top jockey Javier Castellano has the Holy Bull mount while Rafael Hernandez is listed for the Hutcheson.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – A huge Saturday for 3-year-olds is on tap at Gulfstream, with fields for five stakes for sophomores having been drawn Monday.
The main event is the Grade 2, $400,000 Holy Bull Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile race that leads to the Feb. 21 Fountain of Youth and March 28 Florida Derby. Likely favorites in a field of 10 are Upstart, third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, and Frosted, second in the Remsen Stakes.
